Arrowtown Autumn Festival 2026: A Local's Guide to the Best Five Days of the Year
Your complete guide to the 40th Arrowtown Autumn Festival — headline events, insider tips, and the three best autumn bike rides to pair with festival week.

Arrowtown Autumn Festival 2026: A Local Ride Guide
The Arrowtown Autumn Festival is turning 40 this year, and the village is pulling out all the stops. Running from 23–27 April 2026, it's five days of golden leaves, street parades, live music, market stalls, and some of the best food and wine you'll find in the South Island. If you're in Queenstown during festival week, this is the thing to do.
We've been riding the Queenstown Trail through autumn for years, and we can tell you — late April in the Wakatipu Basin is something else. The poplars along the Arrow River go full gold, the vineyards turn crimson, and the light over the Remarkables is the kind of thing you can't quite capture on a phone. But you'll try.
What Happens at the Festival
The Arrowtown Autumn Festival is a genuine community celebration, not a corporate event. Think handmade market stalls along Buckingham Street, live folk music spilling out of heritage pubs, kids' face painting on the village green, and the legendary street parade on Saturday morning. Local restaurants set up outdoor kitchens, and the Gibbston Valley wineries often pour tastings in the village.
Friday evening kicks off with live music across multiple venues in the village. Saturday is the big day — the main street parade, family activities, and the market in full swing. Sunday and Monday slow things down with heritage walks, art exhibitions, and vineyard events. There's also a community fun run and a photography competition for the best autumn colour shot.
Three Rides to Pair with Festival Week
Arrowtown sits right on the Queenstown Trail network, which means you can ride to the festival rather than fight for a car park. Here are the three routes we recommend during autumn.
1. Ride to Riches: Arrowtown to Queenstown
This is the classic one-way ride that follows the Arrow River, crosses the historic Kawarau Bridge, and winds through the Gibbston Valley wine region before finishing in Queenstown. You'll cross seven bridges, pass through gold-mining heritage country, and roll past cellar doors including Monte Christo, Chard Farm, Kinross, and Gibbston Valley Winery. In autumn, the entire Arrow River corridor is a tunnel of gold. The trail surface is smooth gravel, accessible for all fitness levels, and the downhill gradient makes it feel almost effortless on an e-bike.
Mountain bike from $103 or upgrade to a Trek Powerfly 4 e-bike from $155. Includes one-way shuttle, detailed map, and phone holder.

2. Valley of the Vines: Queenstown's Wine Trail
Our flagship tour takes you through the heart of the Gibbston Valley wine region. You'll visit cellar doors at Monte Christo, Kinross, Mt Rosa, The Church, Gibbston Valley, and more — all connected by a stunning riverside trail with suspension bridges and mountain views. During autumn, the vineyards are in their most photogenic state — rows of crimson and amber vines set against the Remarkables. It's a full-day experience with return transport, so you can taste without worrying about driving.
E-bike only at $169 per person. Includes return shuttle, map, and all the time you need at each cellar door.

3. Ale Trail: Wharehuanui Adventure
If wine isn't your thing — or you've done the wineries and want something different — the Ale Trail follows the Shotover River through bush and farmland to Queenstown's best craft breweries. You'll ride past Millbrook Golf Resort, through native beech forest, and finish with a cold one at Altitude Brewing. During autumn, the beech forest shifts through bronze and amber, and the riverside sections catch the low afternoon light — it's one of the quieter, more meditative rides we run. The trail surface is a mix of smooth gravel and sealed path, friendly for first-time riders. This route also connects into the Gibbston Valley sponsors on our map, so you can extend your ride into wine country if the mood strikes.
Mountain bike from $103 or e-bike upgrade from $155. Includes shuttle, map, and recommendations for the best brews along the way.
Why E-Bike the Festival
Arrowtown's streets fill up fast during festival week. Parking is limited, shuttle buses run on fixed schedules, and the road in from Queenstown can back up. On an e-bike, you're on the trail in minutes and arriving relaxed rather than stressed. The ride from Queenstown to Arrowtown via the trail takes about 45 minutes on an e-bike, and it's one of the most scenic commutes you'll ever do.
Our fleet includes the Trek Powerfly 4 and the Giant Talon E+ — both premium e-bikes with enough range to handle a full day of riding and exploring. We provide detailed maps with all the trail connections, cellar doors, and cafes marked.
Practical Tips for Festival Week
Book accommodation early — Arrowtown fills up weeks in advance. If you're staying in Queenstown, the trail ride in is genuinely part of the experience. Bring layers — late April mornings are crisp, but by midday you'll be in a t-shirt. The evenings cool down fast once the sun drops behind the mountains.
For food, skip the queues at the main stalls and walk five minutes to the back streets. The Fork and Tap does an excellent craft beer lineup, and Provisions does the best coffee in town. If you're riding the Valley of the Vines route, Monte Christo's platter is worth building your day around.
Late April in the Wakatipu Basin is something special. Golden leaves, clear skies, and trails that feel like they were built for autumn.
